Chapter Five

The next few weeks flew by in a surreal haze of late nights snuggled in the reading loft at the library with Elizabeth. It had been a surprising at first when Millie found the outspoken New Yorker to be quite serious about her studies. They spent hours pouring over Elizabeth’s thesis on Child Behavior, Millie taking a red pen to the paper. They talked for hours about nothing of importance while they sipped on English Grey tea, a mutual favorite because of its natural caffeine. Sometimes neither of them spoke, content with simply reading next to one another.

“This is shaping up really well,” Millie said.

She shuffled the papers together neatly and handed them to Elizabeth reclined alongside her. In the reading loft, a tiny room that jutted out over the second floor of the library with old pillows and cushions smelling of dust, they were secluded from rest of the library full of other students. It gave Millie enough privacy to be close to Elizabeth without watchful eyes. One disadvantage of going to an all-women’s college was everyone loved to gossip and the last thing she wanted to deal with was a rumor.

Elizabeth smiled lazily up at her as she set the papers on the cushion beside her. “I did the edits you suggested. It’s nice having an English major close by. You come in handy.”

Millie inwardly flushed at the compliment. Her attraction which started as a physical yearning had slowly turned into a deeper attraction and she was at utter loss of what to do about it. They never exactly talked about their love lives.

“Rebecca thinks I’m available 24/7 to edit. I’m always reading over her papers,” she replied, rolling her eyes.

“No offense to Rebecca—she’s a nice girl and all—but it seems like she takes advantage of you.”

Millie tensed up at the unexpected words. “Like how?”

“I don’t know,” Elizabeth said, shrugging her slender shoulders. “It just seems like she relies on your compassion quite a bit.”

“It’s not like that. She’s a good friend. Always has been.”

Her mouth went dry as the urge to defend her best friend, the only friend she could rely on no matter how bossy she could be, roared to life inside of her. Glancing away from Elizabeth’s icy eyes, Millie wrung her hands together in agitation.

“Hey.” Soft fingers covered hers before reaching to cup Millie’s jaw, gently tugging her head back around. Their eyes met as Elizabeth sat up and crossed her legs, a few inches between them. Millie’s heart cramped as it raced inside the caverns of her chest. She was close enough to see the freckles dusting Elizabeth’s face and the grey flecks dotting icy irises. “I wasn’t trying to say anything bad about Rebecca; she’s my friend, too. I was only commenting on something that I saw. I’m sorry. It wasn’t my place.”

Hesitating for a second, Millie reached to wrap her fingers around Elizabeth’s slender wrist and gave a soothing squeeze at the heartfelt apology.

“Don’t worry about it. You aren’t the first person to point it out.
